VisualCV is a resume service that I advocate in the remote job course. There is a free and paid version of the service. I always recommend the paid version if you can afford $12/month. But if you can’t, the free version works just fine.
The main difference between the free and paid version of VisualCV is the level of access you have to resume templates. The paid version comes with resume templates that are more visually appealing while the free version comes with standard resume templates.
If you write a good resume, the visual aspect of your resume will not matter as much. Companies that hire remote employees are concerned more about what you can do and less about how you look.
So how do you create a free VisualCV account? This was not clear to my girlfriend who is interested in looking for a remote job so I decided to create this little tutorial.
Follow these steps to create a free VisualCV account and start creating your online resume:
Go to the VisualCV homepage and click Sign Up on the top right part of the screen. On the signup screen, enter your first and last name, email, and password and then click Sign Up.
After you sign up, you’ll see this image:
This will take you to a new screen that asks you how you want to create your resume. Click on the option that says Start from scratch.
After clicking this, a list of resume templates will appear. The templates at the top are premium templates that you need a paid version of VisualCV to use.
To access the free templates, scroll to the bottom of the page.
I recommend using the template called Slate because it allows you to add a headshot which is an easy way to personalize your resume.
After this, visit the resume creation tutorial to create the content for your resume and format it correctly!
